I,ve dealt with scd and opiates for 15 years. Addition is a mind set. It only becomes addition when u r using drugs just because and not for the actual pain.
Hey. I found this worth world website that is information and family based. They offer support groups and much more. Their website is www.scdfoc.org and their forum board is www.scdfoc.org/forum/
Check it out.

I've never had to deal with the threat of addiction. I know that I start hallucinating and having horrible dreams when I am using high dosage painkillers when pain level lowers. So, I want off to low level painkillers, the kind I maintain with at home or close to it.

So far the medical professionals have been open and willing to give our daughter meds. She's only 3, so I maintain a degree of concern on what these meds are doing to her little body.

Pharmicists are a bit different. They often need a bit more prodding, especially if their re-up date for meds doesn't vibe with the one you have. Then it's off to call the doctor to intervene.

Has anyone had a problem with finding a pharmacy that mixes folic acid? We had a time finding a place outside of having it shipped to us.

No problems with addiction, although I am sure our daughter thinks the motrin actually tastes good.

lol. I'm glad to hear that your little girl thinks Motrin taste good...actually, when you are very young as a child with Sickle Cell, you are treated the way you are supposed to be treated...but when you become a young adult, you start to get treated by quite a few medical 'professionals' like you are 'faking' or they think you are addicted, when the truth is, you cannot become addicted to meds while in TRUE pain. I understand close monitoring, but initially some of these 'professionals' can be VERY judgemental. I don't even like to take take pain medicine when it is at the lower end of the pain scale. Matter of fact, I will sit in pain as to avoid taking even an Alleve, or a Vicodin, and even then, if I have to take it, I start of with one pill of the alleve, or half of a vicodin tablet and do my own techniques, that usually wills it away.

Lady Chi I agree with what you say about how the medical profession treats young adults with the disease which is why I am arming my son, who is 15, with all of the information he needs to "handle" the doctors when I am not around. As children everyone is so sad to see them in so much pain, and parents are there to intervene as needed.
