A Century of Sisterhood: Celebrating 100 Years of Service was the theme for a black-tie event Saturday night honoring a national sorority's centennial at the University of Akron's Martin University Center.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and the local Zeta Theta Omega chapter teamed up for the gala.

Proceeds will support community programming focusing on sickle cell anemia and homelessness, as well as educational activities.

Belinda Hinton and Staci Freeman were co-chairs.

''I've been a member of Alpha for 70 years,'' said 91-year-old Leona Farris.

Teresa LeGrair and Mary Wright welcomed guests as they entered the room where pink and green sorority colors were proudly displayed.

''I'm looking forward to seeing old friends and a festive evening,'' said Albert Fitzpatrick, who attended with his wife, Derien Fitzpatrick.

Sylvia Brown and Tami Swails presented scholarships to LaDonna Mills, Hope Porter, Tanika Guin and Anastasa Williams.

The organizations recognized community businesses and individuals that meet the Extraordinary Service Program (ESP) initiative.

ESP Community Award recipients were Tarea Rhoden, Margo Sommerville, Brandee Wilkinson, Horace Highland, William Ellis Jr. and Gloria Rookard.
